The root of the plant Alkanna tinctoria produces a red dye from its bark. One of the main ingredients of its root is alkannin, a pigment soluble in oils and alcohols that gives a bright purple color.
Biological studies have shown that the oily extract of Alkanna tinctoria roots has antimicrobial (against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermitis), anti-inflammatory and anti-neoplastic effects. The most important and most interesting property of Alkanna, however, is its healing action which is due to the synergy of alkannin, siconin and their esters contained in its root.
